London Heathrow Airport LHR
Started in the 1930s as the Great Western Aerodrome, and opened for civilian use after World War II, Heathrow is now one of the busiest airports in the world, moving more than 67 million passengers in 2007 and trailing only Atlanta and Chicago's O'Hare airports in passenger load. London Underground stations are accessible from the airport to central London. British Airways' new Terminal 5, opened in March 2008, promises to greatly improve services at an airport some derisively refer to as "Deathrow". Long transit delays and heightened security procedures can frustrate the most patient passenger.
The quickest way to access central London is via the Paddington Heathrow Express which whisks you to the heart of London in 15 mins to 20 minutes, depending on which terminal you use. The train stops at Terminal 1,2, 3 and 5 but convenience comes at a price: from GBP 17 one way or GBP 34 for a round trip ticket, with childrens' fares discounted by 50%. Once you arrive in Paddington, many of the Central London attractions are readily accessible by underground trains.
London Gatwick Airport LGW
Gatwick, second largest airport in the UK after Heathrow, is a short 28 miles south of London (second to Heathrow in distance from London). The two terminals, North and South, are connected by a monorail service, which takes all of two minutes to get travelers from one terminal to the other. Gatwick, where 90 airlines operate from, services 200 destinations and offers travelers a wide choice of shops, information desks, bureaux de change, and luggage storage facilities.
